New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) Fashion designer Anita Dongre is hunting for an accessory designer for her company AND Designs India Ltd and is taking the crowdsourcing way to discover the best talent.

Dongre decided to use the power of online media and has tied up with Talenthouse India, a crowdsourcing platform for the hunt.

“The internet has revolutionised the way many businesses and industries are operated. This initiative sets a new standard how fashion design houses like AND Designs India Ltd will hunt for and collaborate with great aspiring talent,” Dongre said in a press statement.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to building a creative technically qualified accessory design team to create international quality eco-friendly accessory lines with a strong Indian design element,” said Dongre.

The chosen designer will get an opportunity to work with her designing team at AND Designs India Ltd.

“Crowdsourcing has become the latest buzzword across the globe with mentors and brands across all industries using it to not only hunt for talent but also to engage with their audiences,” said Arun Mehra, CEO, Talenthouse.

“This collaboration puts Anita Dongre in the league of international names like D&G, Nine West, etc who undertook similar initiatives to mentor talent with us,” he added.

     “When a Crowd is Company”

The public is a fount of resources, skills and ideas. More and more companies are tapping this via the Internet to solve business problems. Crowd sourcing is cheap and efficient, and is fast gaining scale.

In 2010, when India’s central bank decided to create a symbol for the rupee, instead of asking a design house, it asked, well, everyone. The Reserve Bank of India invited the public to post their designs on its website. It received 3,000 designs, from which it chose the design of Udaya Kumar, an IIT student. While that was a rare outreach by a government arm, it’s a routine exercise for the $82.6 billion Proctor & Gamble (P&G). The US-based consumer goods major has a dedicated website, P&G Connect+Develop, to solicit ideas for products, technologies, businesses and innovation –from one and all. The ideas sought are both general and specific. Currently, P&G has 85 ‘needs’ like ‘new ingredients or products that reduce the severity of common cold’. This open strategy works for P&G. “More than 50% of the ideas for our new products and innovation came from here,” says Raju Konduru, head of P&G’s innovation centre in Bangalore. Like Olay Regenerist, an anti-wrinkle cream, the peptide technology for which came from a small, unknown French firm via Connect+Develop. “It (the site) helps accelerate innovation,” adds Konduru. It’s called ‘crowd-sourcing’, and it involves the outsourcing of a function once performed only by employees to the public. The Internet is expanding the idea of the ‘crowd’ as partner, helping companies and empowering professionals. It is shaping all sorts of business engagements and business models in developed markets, where crowd-sourcing is about six years old. On the one end of the spectrum are large corporations like P&G and Dell, which have dedicated sites to tap ideas relating to their businesses from the public. On the other end are smaller enterprises, which are trying to ride on websites that are in the business of creating a meeting place for crowds and companies. “It (crowd-sourcing) can help businesses keep costs low while getting their work done by qualified people who can deliver good quality,” says Sitashwa Srivastava, CEO of Jade Magnet, a Bangalore-based crowdsourcing platform. Both these templates, though nascent in India, are gathering steam. So, for example, the logo of Ashok Soota’s new IT venture, Happiest Minds, came from Jade Magnet. “We had a specific and well-defined project that didn’t require any serious background research,” says Salil Godika, chief strategy & marketing officer, Happiest Minds. “So, we chose to crowd-source it as a faster way that would give us fresh and diverse thinking.” Besides ideas, it is birthing ventures that would probably be stillborn in a conventional financing scenario. Crowd-funding is helping small and independent film-makers to make the films they want to. And it’s creating a new model in the microfinance sector, with online platforms like Milaap, Rang De and MicroGraam connecting people who want to lend or donate for small, livelihood loans with those who need them.

What’s In It For SMEs…
For small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), lower costs, without a corresponding drop in quality, is a major incentive to crowd-source. The premise: in one-to-one client dealings, overheads pad up costing. In crowd-sourcing, overheads are minimal. For smaller and simpler projects, then, costs come down drastically. Jessie Paul, the former chief marketing officer of Wipro and who now runs a marketing consultancy, has used crowd-sourcing platforms for brochure templates and logos. She is a satisfied client. “Their advantage is that you pay only for what you use. You don’t have to pay for the person’s downtime,” says the CEO of Paul Writer. Godika estimates that for a logo design, crowd-sourcing is cheaper by a minimum 20-30%; this can increase depending on the project brief and stature of the design firm hired in a direct dealing. Paul says the world is shifting towards informal labour networks and India will follow. “As more work can be done remotely and digitally, the need for these digital equivalents of temping firms will only rise.” Already, in India, crowd-sourcing is funding microfinance and films, testing software and websites, doing design jobs, creating advertising and firing innovation, among other things. According to Sandeep Khanna, founder and editor of crowdsourcingindia.com, an online Indian crowd-sourcing publication, over 500 SMEs have used such platforms in the past year. “It is growing fast because of the growing freelance culture,” he says. “Since the model helps SMEs, more people are able to use it and benefit.” Take Jade Magnet, which primarily hosts projects related to logo and website design, brochures, demo animation, and print and banner ads. CEO Srivastava says it has delivered about 1,200 projects in two years and the adoption rate is increasing. “Convincing clients, especially SMEs, is never easy. But when they see the cost advantage, they agree to give crowd-sourcing a shot,” he says. “Also, viral effects and referrals is popularising crowd-sourcing among small companies and start-ups.” One of Jade’s recent clients is Sure Fertility, a fertility clinic in Bangalore. The clinic posted a design brief for a logo on Jade, including its budget and time. It received about 35 designs. It short-listed one. After a few iterations with the designer through Jade’s Magnet messaging application, it arrived at the final design. …

For Working Professionals…
As more enterprises take some of their work online, it’s opening up freelance

opportunities for certain skill sets: visual artists, software testers, web and marketing professionals, copywriters and actors, among others. Deepti Goel, for instance, has earned about $7,000 (about 3.5 lakh) by designing logos and doing animation work on Jade Magnet for about 15 clients from the UK and India. The 29-year-old graphic designer is currently designing a website for a client in the Middle-East. “It has provided lot of freelancers, individuals and firms a good platform to work on,” she says, from her home in New Delhi. Doing a few assignments on a platform tends to open up a line of communication for the providers with it, which translates into work. “Over the months, we have built familiarity with the platform and they have also understood our quality of work,” says Ronak Meghani, a software engineer and web designer, about Jade. “That makes it easier for us than, say, new providers.” “This works equally well for small and large businesses,” says Paul. “This gives them access to talented people they probably could not afford or retain on a full-time basis,” she adds.
…For Crowd-sourcing Platforms… Crowd-sourcing platforms usually charge clients either per transaction or per subscription. Part of this goes to the providers. According to Srivastava, Jade keeps 20% of the client fee and passes on the rest to the provider. Some like Talenthouse also charge a registration fee. Selling advertising on the website is another revenue stream. “We seek brand sponsorships for each ‘creative invite’ that we put up,” says Arun Mehra, CEO of Talenthouse India, a joint venture between Reliance Entertainment and Talenthouse, a crowd-sourcing platform for performing arts. However, given the nascent nature of the business, hardly any crowdsourcing platforms are making profits. “Each project ends up making an operational profit,” says Srivastava of Jade. However, adds Khanna of crowdsourcingindia.com: “Most platforms are in investment mode.” With an eye on a wider audience, platforms are investing in technology, marketing, research and delivery methods. The challenge for a crowd-souring platform is to bring together a large number of providers and vendors on a platform, while keeping its marketing spends low and maintaining high quality in delivery. Says Srivastava: “Platforms are also struggling with payments. They need to figure out the best way to accept payments from vendors and distribute it to providers.” Srivastava says a mature online presence is needed for crowdsourcing to be effective. “Internet penetration in India, as well as speed and bandwidth, is still not very high, though this is changing,” he says. Paul says 23% of the 500,000 active contractors of Elance, a US-based platform that has facilitated programming jobs worth $400 million, are based in India. “With loads of talent available in smaller cities and towns, crowd-sourcing can help businesses access it without having to wait for these people to migrate to metros,” says Paul. “On top of that, there is a significant cost arbitrage within the country. That makes for a nice value proposition.”
…And Large Corporations Even big companies are adapting crowd-sourcing into their business. In early-2010, Parle Agro used Twitter to identify supply-chain gaps. When it launched Hippo, it asked consumers and retailers to tweet to a specified Twitter handle the non-availability of this brand of potato chips in their neighbourhood. The company says it received tweets from 25 cities and sales jumped 76% that week. “The symbiosis of crowd-sourcing and social media makes for a perfect business plan,” says Nadia Chauhan, joint MD & CMO, Parle Agro, who plans to develop such channels and communities for each of its brands. Hero MotoCorp’s ongoing ad campaign, ‘hum mein hain hero’, asks the public to upload their video to the AR Rahman tune on its website, which the company then incorporates into its TV ad. “Its genesis lies in this ownership displayed by people: what if every individual was given a chance to create a video that could be seen by others?” explains Anil Dua, senior vice president-marketing and sales, Hero MotoCorp. As is evident, large Indian companies are still using crowd-sourcing for soft activities, unlike, say, the US. Dell, for example, launched a crowdsourcing site, ideastorm.com, in early-2008. According to Dell, the site has logged about 11,000 ideas, of which, 350 were implemented. These include making USB 3.0 port a standard feature on its PC and laptops, a common charger for devices, and introduction of anti-glare on notebook screens. The real appeal of crowd-sourcing, though, is for smaller, less mainstream outfits and ideas. In microfinance, for example, crowd-sourcing is enabling a meeting of minds. According to Rangan Varadan, founder of Micrograam, the power of the crowd-sourcing model is two-fold. One, because investors are socially-conscious individuals, there is little pressure on a microcredit company to be aggressive in repayment and collection, or pursue excessive profits or growth. Second, it offers an effective vehicle for thousands to contribute towards rural development. “We should also look at this model from the perspective of people who are interested in doing something for the benefit of the poor in India, but are not sure how,” says Varadan. “Until recently, the only option they had was to donate to charity.” Infilms, crowdsourcing is promoting independent films. For example, in 2009, Onir raised onethird of the 3 crore budget of his last film ‘I Am’ using Facebook and other socialnetworking sites. “Hundreds of people from many countries contributed as little as 1,000 and as much as 15 lakh,” he says. Directors Anurag Kashyap, Ashvin Kumar and Guneet Monga want to follow suit. “Crowd-sourcing in India is currently at the stage where e-commerce was two years ago,” says Mehra of Talenthouse India. “It is about to explode.”

Business Standard/Mumbai Jan 23, 2012, 00:57 IST

Micromax has fallen back on crowdsourcing to revamp the company’s logo. The Delhi-based mobile handset maker has organised a nationwide creative hunt in the digital space in association with Talenthouse India, a joint venture between Reliance Entertainment, the flagship media and entertainment arm of India’s Reliance Group, and the California-based, Talenthouse. Says Pratik Seal, country head, marketing, Micromax India, “The design that reflects the brand’s personality — that is, young, innovative, audacious, outgoing, dynamic, fluid and energetic with an international appeal — will surely be on the top.” The contest targets the design community across the virtual world. Students from over 150 colleges and design schools such as Picasso Animation College, Arena Animation, ZICA Animation Institute, Raffles Design Institute, and FX School of Photography, working professionals and established designers have been invited to participate in this contest and showcase their creativity. “This contest is a great way to connect with consumers and learn how they perceive the brand. The entries that come in from artists across the country will give us more interesting options than have just one agency working on it,” says Seal. From its own admission, Micromax got the idea of crowdsourcing from the Government of India. “When we saw the Indian Government getting the rupee symbol with the help of crowdsourcing, we decided to take this bold step to get the company’s logo redesigned,” says Arun Mehra, chief executive officer, Talenthouse India. “It is a calculated risk, which every marketer needs to take at some point or the other. The only challenge which lies in these digital contests is that many of the participants are still not net savvy. However, with the improvement and easy accessibility of technology, we believe this barrier will also cease to exist in a few years.”

Of course, the trend of soliciting customer input is not new, and the whole movement for open-source software demonstrated it can be done with a large number of people. Today as technology is becoming cheaper and more friendly, it is becoming easier for brands to enlist more and more non-technical people to do more complex and creative tasks, at significantly reduced cost. Participants need to upload their logo, submitting a minimum of one and a maximum of three designs on www.talenthouse.com and on the social media page of Micromax. The logo should reflect the brand’s tagline ‘Nothing like anything’. The winner, to be announced on February 28, 2012, will be awarded an Apple Mac book pro. Adds Seal, “This is only a digital campaign; we will be present across the web space including the social media sites and the blogs. We believe that the digital space is the most efficient way to target the designer community.” For Micromax, these are interesting times. The company has been rated the 12th largest handset manufacturer in the world, with one per cent share globally, by a Strategy Analytics report. Strategy Analytics tracks the world’s 30 largest handset vendors on a quarterly basis.

Shakti : I am a multi-disciplinary artist working in design, writing, music, performing arts, photography and film. I graduated with a degree in Advertising with University of Mumbai and earned a scholarship to study an additional year abroad with UWO, Canada where I reconnected with my love for writing, music and the arts!

TH: How did you get to know about Talenthouse India and the opportunity with OPIUM?

Shakti: Actually, I was already a member of Talenthouse (Global) which I had joined while I was still on the exchange program. I was scouting projects to work on after feeling inspired at the art studio one morning – and I’m not sure if I saw an advertisement or if I stumbled upon one of the creative invites somehow – but there it suddenly was!

I joined TH because it seemed like a great platform for independent artists to gain exposure on a larger scale – especially since many of the opportunities were at a global level and offered collaboration opportunities with some pretty big names – the contest I clearly remember was the one where artists were able to design a dress for Florence (from Florence & the Machine) and that seemed like a pretty big deal in terms of how big that was in terms of exposure!

I had already been making entries on the global site when suddenly THIndia was released one morning and I noticed the opportunity to design a line of eyewear which seemed pretty great considering that the reward included more than just prize money – it was an opportunity to launch my designs as limited edition Opium sunglasses in 400 retail stores nationwide!

I knew the stakes were pretty high when up against other quality work from around the world and having seen the kind of work that was constantly being uploaded to the site– but the payoff for the Opium contest seemed worth the while! Like I said, I like to work across many disciplines and the fact that the invites on TH spanned music, art/design, film, fashion as well as photography– the website seemed like the perfect canvas for my artistic ambitions.

TH: What did you think of the opportunity? Was it an exciting opportunity for you

Shakti : The excitement for the contest came and went. The Opium invite was originally announced in February and then disappeared by end April before I could invite any friends to vote– I wasn’t sure what was going on and whether the project was off completely because the invite went offline the day it was suppose to open to voters. I learned later on that Talenthouse India was still in it’s beta stage, but come October the invite re-opened with THI’s official launch and finally things got rolling!

I think the great part about the Opium opportunity was that the eyewear collection will be launched in 400 stores and will be carrying my name on the product – and that’s awesome! I was able to get in touch with Opium and hopefully we can execute the product as close to the concept designs as possible!

TH: What was your reaction when you got to know that you are the winner?

Shakti: I think it’s great that the results were a combination of voting as well as the judges panel – because that allowed for a balanced outcome in terms of the final results!

The folks at Talenthouse totally played me when revealing the results! I had no idea what was going on for quite some time after the voting period closed – because the contest had gone into an extended judging process, as happens sometimes in contests that run on a larger scale. I was beginning to wonder if it was going to be a while before participants would hear from them – considering this was almost in the midst of the holiday season and I had already seen the contest go into a snooze earlier in the year.

When Mayura and team called me, they had me fooled with small talk and told me that I was the first member on Talenthouse India and that they were happy to have such a talented participant, etc almost making me believe that I was a runner-up of sorts. After five minutes of reassuring me that I shouldn’t give up as a designer, the gig was up and they burst out laughing! They informed me that I had won the contest and told me to await the next instruction. I actually had to text and confirm which part of the conversation was the actual truth! It was an insane phone call!

TH: What did you think of the other designs that were submitted?

Shakti: Once we opened for voting, there were some pretty cool designs in the mix – a design which featured a women’s line of eyewear looked like it had some great detailing and it got me thinking that the competition could go either way. I also enjoyed one design which had some elements of fantasy incorporated into the product line – like a superhero styled design.

TH: What does DESIGNING mean to you?

Shakti: Designing for me is a means to express my style, my aesthetic – it’s an expression of personality and individual essence – bringing together functionality and beauty. Designing allows me to create things as I envision them. More importantly designing to me is all about taking crazy risks with colours and patterns and playing with a subject on my own terms!

The beauty of design is the ability to employ functionality with a unique difference. It’s about making things easier, more comfortable and even more personal. You and I may not like the same thing – but we still need protection from the sunrays. Can you imagine if everyone on earth had to wear exactly the same eyewear?

TH: What was the inspiration behind your art work?

Shakti: Creation sources from the self, so the question to ask was, what would I want to wear?

I’m quite particular about what I endorse and don’t always find the kind of designs that reflect my style in stores. I am always talking about how I wish I could just go in and do a certain design my own way or how a certain design could use a little less shine – and so the Opium opportunity was exactly that.

Eyewear can do so much for you, especially if you enjoy dressing up and expressing yourself through fashion! I wanted to create a line of eyewear that had personality and was minimalistic, yet stylish. I rarely find affordable eyewear that has the right proportions – Either the frames are off or the lens is too small – I wanted to take the opportunity to create a line of eyewear that I would wear! Something to help me change it up every once in a while.

I wanted to design a line of eyewear that the wearer would resonate with in terms of mood and style. The Free Spirit Collection is about three characters: the charmer, the dreamer, the hunter – the way they approach life and the things they go after. The idea was to design something with a bit of a spark – it needed to be something that I would connect with and personally would love to wear. Opium is a brand that reflects personality and so the collection was designed to be an extension of that image.

TH: Any exciting plans for the future?

Shakti: I recently designed the CD Artwork for Toronto based independent musician Alex James’ debut album and also have been working independently with a couple of exciting branding projects!

I currently work at a leading jewellery house as a branding and communications manager and am involved in all design related functions of the brand! I am currently redesigning the official website and we are also working on upgrading our packaging - it’s looking to be a lot of fun since we are completely revamping our marketing related efforts for the new year!

I hope to continue working on some great projects across the board and I am really looking forward to hold my Opium eyewear collection – friends are already expecting them as presents so you can imagine the excitement around the project!

As you all know, Vidhu Vinod Chopra has teamed up with Talenthouse to offer an exciting Creative Invite! He is looking out for a script writer who can contribute a stimulating and interesting script to the VVC film kitty.

Due to the massive concerns from the script writers community about intellectual property rights of their script and protection of their original ideas we have made this creative invite Voting free!

The voting process will not take place instead the mentor will select the top 5 best scripts and the winner will be chosen accordingly with consolation rewards to the selected finalist.Although there is no obligation on the part of VCF to select a winner in the event that none of the submissions appear to be worthy.

However in this case, the best entry will get a cash prize of INR 30,000/- on behalf of Talenthouse. VCF will not be obliged to use the work of the winning candidate

If you have any friend who are scriptwriters and would be interested in taking part in this Invite, here is our URL to the Invite: http://www.talenthouse.com/creativeinvites/show/detail/353

Keep the creative juices flowing!!

So while this year is coming to an end I just started to think of my wish list and thought the only reason I would compile a wish list is to know what will make me happy in the future; so I can look forward to it in hope and anticipation of the ‘wish fulfillment’.

So it all boils down to happiness. So how are you doing with your HQ — Happiness Quotient? Do you know what really makes you happy? Gregory David Robert mentions in his book that “Happiness is a myth, it was invented for us to buy things”….So happiness is
1. Falling in love.
2. Laughing so hard your face hurts.
3. A hot shower.
4. No lines at the supermarket.
5. A special glance.
6. Getting mail.
7. Taking a drive on a pretty road.
8. Hearing your favourite song on the radio.
9. Lying in bed listening to the rain outside.
10. Chocolate milkshake … (or vanilla … or strawberry!)
11. A bubble bath.
12. Giggling.

When I was in school ,they told me to write down write down what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I wrote down happy.
They told me I didn’t understand the assignment,
I told them they didn’t understand life

Appreciating the small pleasures in life can go a long way in increasing your happiness quotient.

Take time to find out your HQ . Knowing yourself and what you want is really the key here.

As the new year is approaching we all make our list of “years resolutions ” which we fail to maintain even for a week let alone an entire year. The reason more often than not is that we try to make difficult and life changing resolutions which are impossible to maintain, even when we have tried it an umpteen number of times earlier and just because the year changes we expect ourselves to change too?.So this this year, make it a point to try new things, break old habits, and push yourself and your talent to new limits and most importantly keep it simple!

So here is our simple resolutions that every photographer should make & try to maintain .

1) I WILL KEEP THE AUTO SETTINGS OFF

Try and experiment with the manual settings rather than simply relying on what the camera has to offer. The picture will not always be perfect but you will become a master of perfection if you perfect this practice. Play around with the camera features (after sticking to resolution No. 2)and dont get discouraged from the results just keep trying.

2)I WILL READ MY CAMERA MANUAL ALWAYS

We are all guilty of the “lets see what pushing this button does” syndrome.Fiddling with our camera and when asked how did you get this result replying with a ‘ i just did something with this button!’Yes its boring and tiresome to read through pages and pages of features ,technicalities and specification but lets become technical experts of our camera this year.

3)I WILL TRY ALL ANGELS WHEN I CLICK

Yes not all pictures can be taken on eye level , we need to bend our knees for some!Try clicking without the tripod.

4)I WILL NOT USE CAMERA-ON FLASH

Try resisting from the itch of switching the flash on in low light. The photographs that make the beautiful night sky look like a early morning one is not really the one to be the highlight of your portfolio .Click beautiful low light shots .

5)I WILL SHOOT IN RAW AND NOT GET HAMPERED BY THE ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT THAT I DONT HAVE

Simply set your picture quality to raw and click like there is no photo-shop.Do not worry of the newest attachment available for your camera in the market, but rather let it open up new possibilities to be creative.

Let keep clicking and make 2012 a creative ,colorful & inspirational year!

Guillotine, a rock band based in Delhi won the band hunt and it will open the act for Metallica@F1rocks concert.

Speaking about the band hunt, Mr. Arun Mehra (CEO- Talenthouse India) said, “Talenthouse India is a platform that encourages individual from every walk of life to showcase their flair to the creative community. This band hunt provided a great opportunity for various rock bands across India to perform and possibly share the same stage as Metallica. It was a very difficult task to choose one band from over 250 band entries that had participated (either by uploading their video link on www.talenthouse.co.in or by mailing Talenthouse India their video entries). A Jury comprising of one member from Talenthouse India, one member from MTV India and one member from Noise Associates went through each and every entry to shortlist the best 25 entries. Our job further involved detailed R&D on every band looking into several factors like previous original work, rock style, right energy levels, etc to select the final 8 shortlisted bands who would then compete against each other for the winning position.”

Guillotine is very excited and looking forward to perform at the same stage as Metallica. Speaking about the win, Guillotine said, “Opening for Metallica was something we couldn’t even afford to dream about. We highly doubt that the English language has a word to describe how we’re feeling right now. Sharing the stage with the biggest metal band in the world just sounds unreal. We’re thankful for platforms like Talenthouse India that encourage talent and motivate us to perform even better.”
Guillotine started in about 2006. It’s a 5 member band that plays progressive metal. They already have one album under their belt called ‘The Cynics’ which is a concept album revolving around a man’s realization of the hollowness of religious faith. Guillotine with its unique brand of progressive metal has steadily made its mark on the Indian and International metal scene. Progressive Death metal as they label their music blends the powerful guitar driven tones of death metal with various elements of jazz, funk, reggae, blues etc. Most compositions would see unique acoustic guitar passages and strong dynamic shifts with vocals ranging from growls to clean singing

Girls, grid, machine, and metal are enough to get most interested. Add to that, entries open to bands across India on Talenthouse.co.in to join Metallica on stage for their opening act on 28 October at the inaugural Formula One Grand Prix and interest levels pique to an all new high.

The concert is expected to attract upto 30,000 Metallica fans at Leisure Valley, Gurgaon. The selection process will include a panel of eight judges who will shortlist 8 bands. The shortlisted bands will then participate in a TV show for the final winner selection on MTV. Once the winning band is selected, they will then go on to perform three original songs as the opening act for Metallica. Now we are talking!

The company that’s made the tie-up possible: Talenthouse. Founded by Amos Pizzey, a British DJ and Roman Scharf, co-founder of the internet phone service Jafah the global social networking website and creative community now comes to India. Their site members include the likes of filmmaker Fernando Meirelles, City of God, actor Stephen Dorff, and avant garde curator Dan Cameron among others.

<img src="http://www.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/MetallicaGetty.jpg" alt="Kirk Hammett (L) and James Hetfield of Metallica perform onstage.
Talenthouse aims to connect filmmakers, photographers, musicians, and artists on collaborative projects and embrace artists at entry level career, as well as all supporters of art.

The crowd sourcing competitions on Talenthouse prior to their India launch have attracted the likes of Universal Music Group, MTV, Nokia, Adidas, Glamour Magazine, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Virgin Mobile, and a host of other industry icons.

The yet to be officially announced site already has call for entries for designers, film assistants, photographers, models, musicians. Talenthouse’s success in the US has depended on the technology and the collaborations with celebrities to flesh out profiles and creative invites. If the India division continues to do that post Metallica and the artists on board already, reality TV in India inc. may soon be replaced with going viral or trending on Twitter. Either ways, it’s a great place for young emerging talent to grow and be recognised.

Editor’s Note: This is a contribution by Michelle Rick

Moviegoers could be seeing 3-D in a new light once three of Hollywood’s most renowned filmmakers push the illusory format with their latest works. Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Scorsese hope to lend credibility to 3-D with their upcoming films, and are confident that 3-D can play a key role in enhancing the cinematic experience and pushing the boundaries of filmmaking.

“Cinema is a baby. Of course we’re going to see wonderful innovations come,” said Coppola at a preview presentation for his new film “Twixt” at Comic-Con. The film, which premieres next month at the Toronto Film Festival, is meant to be enjoyed in both 2-D and 3-D formats, with subtle visual cues directing the audience to put on and remove their 3-D glasses.

Martin Scorsese, whose “Hugo” will release in November, says, “There’s no reason why, for lack of a better phrase, ‘serious films’ couldn’t be done in 3-D. There really is no reason for it except for technical limitations. As far as audience acceptance is concerned, it’s just a matter of time until things get a little more easy in terms of glasses versus no glasses and other issues.

“If at the time, in the early 1970s, when I made ‘Mean Streets’ or ‘Taxi Driver,’ or even ‘Raging Bull’ in 1980, if 3-D was the norm, I think those stories would have fit in perfectly in 3-D.”

3-D advocates say the support of these cinematic magistrates is just what it needs right now as it faces a decline in popularity. While films like 2009’s “Avatar “and 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland” derived upwards of 70% of their profit from 3-D, this summer’s “Harry Potter’ and “Green Lantern” saw audiences reverting back to the standard. The slip is also reflected in the dropped share prices for 3-D technology companies like RealD, who serve as the United States’ biggest supplier of 3-D projection systems and eyewear.

In spite of what the numbers say, filmmakers are certain that the utilization of 3-D is an asset to their craft. It is the adhesive that blends the elements of theater and film, according to Scorsese. “The actors become a moving sculpture. This brings it out, particularly in the faces of the actors, the drama.” He views 3-D as a complement to “Hugo,” as it will accentuate the details of the 1931 Parisian train station in which the story is set. “The film seemed to cry out for the extra element of space and depth,” the director explained.

Increasing the depth of the 3-D imagery during intense scenes helped “increase the excitement” in Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, according to the director himself. “I believe it will have a subliminal effect,” he said.

With these fresh and optimistic takes on the potential impact 3-D could have on the film industry, audiences need only wait until the end of the year to see if the technology will garner a second wind.

Art, artists, and the creative community is what we are here for. For us in Talenthouse, is an honor to collaborate spreading the word about the world’s artistic communities. We are happy to welcome the first edition of FURIAMAG, an online magazine that showcases the talented artistic communities of Colombia. Juan David Gómez is the creative mind behind the production of the magazine and this is what he tell us about it.

FURIAMAG is an independent online magazine free to download, that gathers graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, street artists, 3D designers, and other colombian creative communities with the purpose of showcasing, supporting, highlighting and spreading their talent in a space with which they feel identified. FURIAMAG seeks to become the medium referent of design nationally and internationally, besides being a source of inspiration and feedback for future artists.

The project FURIAMAG was born approximately a year and half ago, when I decided to take the risk and materialize an idea that I’ve had for many years, create my own online magazine, where I could show all the real potential of the colombian creative communities, gather them in one place, highlight, support and spread the word about their art offering a place with which they can feel identified.

It was an extremely difficult process because I wanted to create something stunning and that generated some buzz in the medium. Besides that, I created the project alone and I had to be the programmer, designer, animator and even the one that made the coffee, so to speak haha … but at the same time it has been very satisfying to know that without the launching of the first edition, people from all over became fond of the project, sharing their art and knowledge through our social media channels. Due to this buzz, artists from Brazil, Argentina, United States, Belgium, Germany, and Spain among others, collaborated in the first edition of FURIAMAG.

Neil Neenan is a freelance filmmaker from the United Kingdom who specializes in camera operating, editing and directing. His work has been varied thus far, from music videos and short films to electronic press kits for musicians. While currently focused on finding musical talent to work with on music videos, he aspires to break into feature film.

TH: If you could collaborate with any artist/band on a music video, who would it be and why?
NN: If I gave you a list of all the musicians I’d like to work with, we’d all be dead by the time I finished writing it. But currently up there at the top of the pile is the insanely underrated Ed Harcourt. He’s an incredible lyricist and musician. From a music video making point of view, his lyrics are full of metaphors and there’s a lot of emotional presence in the music, so it’s great for conjuring up ideas.

I’d recommend the albums ‘Lustre’ and ‘The Beautiful Lie’. If you ever see his name on a gig poster somewhere, I urge you to check him out. It’s a rare treat to see him and his band (which also consists of his wife’s band, ‘The Langley Sisters’, who are also something special) live and they never disappoint. Gigs I’ve seen in London have been really intimate, which is always my favourite kind of show.

TH: What do you enjoy most about making music videos?
NN: With regards to the medium itself, the thing I most appreciate from a film making perspective is that they’re great for experimentation. Especially for first time or developing filmmakers, since there aren’t really any specific rules to live by and it’s more about expression of emotions. Whether that be through aesthetics, performance, narrative or all three, is down to you.

The most enjoyable thing about the actual production process for me is getting to work with the artist. It’s a real buzz when someone likes your ideas and when you bring those ideas into production; it’s a lot of fun watching it all come together.

TH: What advice would you offer to someone else starting out in your field?
NN: I’m still fairly new to this game, but with each project I learn something about filmmaking or the industry in general, so I’ll answer this as best I can at this stage of my career.

The first thing I would suggest is if you’re really serious about getting into directing, in whatever field that may be, is to get a permanent or part time job in the industry if you can (hard economic times, blah blah blah), pick up a camera and practice your filmmaking skills in your spare time. You might even find that a job in a facilities house will get you access to certain equipment and provide you with training. There are also several training schemes available to young people if you look in the right places.

Get all the help you can from friends and family (I used to make a lot of family films and documentaries to practice editing and camerawork, for example). If you had previously been to university or college to study film, help your colleagues out in each other’s ventures. Some friends of mine rent a place together and have their own production team going whereby each housemate has their own skill(s) to bring to the table.

When I finished university, I thought I could just walk into a job. The truth is, to get your feet firmly on the ground in the film industry it takes a lot of hard work and willpower. Unfortunately, in times like these, very few producers are willing to take a risk on a newbie anymore.

With that in mind, after graduating I decided to attempt to create my own opportunities. I made a short, ‘The View’, a four-minute film that was really about proving to myself that I could legitimately make a professional production that would get into festivals and that people would appreciate on an emotional level. So, I hired a great little crew (many of whom I still work with on occasion) and, because it was only a short film that we shot in a day, I was able to take on more responsibilities and teach myself about independent production along the way.

TH: What inspires you to keep going and how do you keep yourself motivated?
NN: I just love both the process and the outcome when you finally expose your work; it’s nice to get compliments and you learn from the criticisms. The production and post-production processes of creating a piece of film are very addictive, followed by the rewarding moment when you’ve finished project.

Watching the work of other filmmakers is what keeps me motivated. When I see something I really enjoy for the first time, I get excited about it and I’m suddenly fuelled by inspiration – it makes me want to get out there and make something again.

TH: What does creativity mean to you?
NN: Let’s try to answer this one without sounding too pretentious. I think for me it’s mostly about expressing emotion and sharing your own perspective of the world with others. It’s about looking at something from a unique angle and doing so in a way that is entertaining to whoever your proposed audience is.

Whether it’s “artist block,” trying to find a job, or hearing bad news we as artists, creatives, and simply human beings, all struggle with our fair share of problems.

It’s always easier to find things to complain about or be sad about, but don’t you feel better when you find ways to be happy? I know I do! And that is why I wanted to share some points from an article I found on Tiny Buddah yesterday – how to cultivate happiness from within.

Control what you can, and let go of what you can’t. Instead of struggling, fighting, and beating yourself up over things that don’t flow as smoothly as you’d like, accept what you can’t control. Worrying about it won’t change it, so why waste your time spinning your wheels?

Learn to love yourself. According to the Mighty Mother of Metaphysics, Louise Hay, most (if not all) of our issues stem from the belief that we are not good enough. We’ve been berating ourselves our whole lives—of course we aren’t happy! It’s time to turn that around. Spend time with people who make you happy. Surround yourself with positive, inspiring people who you love to be around.

Pay it forward. Remember those people who have it far worse? Look out for them. Being charitable, doing your bit for humanity, going out of your way to do something for someone else—it all helps to make you feel good, as well. Not only will it help others and attract good karma in the long run, in the short term it will give you a great feeling of self-worth.

If you feel up to it please share your thoughts - What helps you cultivate happiness?

Fabien Martinet is a French artist who gives priority to motion and signs. His style is at the crossroads of East and West. Early on he discovered painting by classical training, but his academic approach was rapidly influenced by Asian thought.

TH: Which of your artistic achievements are you most proud of?
FM: It always is the last painting I created, while thinking about the next one…

TH: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned about your career?
FM: Humility through constant soul-searching.

TH: Would you share some of your future projects?
FM: I am preparing a 4 months exhibition that will start in January 2012 in Paris (Avenue Kleber). At least fifty paintings will be exhibited.

TH: How many Creative Invites have you participated in?
FM: Six already: South Amboy Festival of the Arts / deadmau5 / Design for Nine West/ Customize a Bugaboo stroller/ Design jewelry for Debra Shepard / Create a T-shirt for Kylie Minogue.

TH: What are some of the toughest things to deal with as an artist?
FM: 1 / Most galleries in Paris are just “wall renters” run by people whose main concern is profit, not artists.
2 / Conceptual art is trendy while my artistic approach tends towards the informal, lyric abstraction.
3 / I have a hard time with the commercial aspect of the business and I don’t want to spend too much time on it. Otherwise, it will affect my work and I want to keep enjoying making art. I am thus looking for art patrons, sponsors who could help me.
In conclusion, being an artist can be tough but I am willing to work very hard… you have to keep pushing, challenge yourself and most of all, enjoy every moment!

Globally acclaimed fashion house, Issa London, has been worn by some of the biggest names around including Kate Middleton, Naomi Campbell, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Scarlett Johansson. We had the honor of teaming up with Issa to give one model the opportunity to walk the runway for them this September, and now they have an exciting project for fashion and pattern designers.

We’re over the moon to be joining forces with Hot New Face and Talenthouse and beginning the search for a unique addition to the Issa family – Daniella Helayel, designer and founder of Issa

Issa is looking for designers to bring their fresh approach, personality and vision which can easily translate into a classically chic silk Issa jersey dress. Interested designers should submit one print design for the chance to have it produced into an exclusive dress for Issa’s upcoming seasonal line.

Joe Fordham of FlashFilms began his career as a filmmaker in suburban South-East England during the 80′s with a small group of like-minded individuals who formed an award-winning amateur filmmaking unit known as Dangerous Visions. After a dozen or so Super 8 productions, Joe connived his way into producing his first 16mm film while working in cutting rooms in London’s seedy Soho filmmaking community. Since 2001, Joe has been associate editor at Cinefex magazine, while screenwriting and movie making in the digital video format.

TH: As a filmmaker, what is the most important lesson you’ve learned about your career?
JF: Filmmaking is hard, expensive and highly collaborative. For all those reasons, make sure what you decide to shoot means something to you. That really helps to see a project to completion.

TH: Which film do you believe to be the one every filmmaker must see?
JF: Why, “The Glitch”, of course! No — I can only reference the film that meant the most to me, which was “Jaws” on its theatrical release when I was a boy. That was the film that changed everything for me, and I still hold it in high regard for its blend of story, character and technique, as well as its great performances, editing and score. Some highfaluting critics have branded the film the harbinger of the soulless blockbuster. But 36 years later, millions of people have responded to the film on a visceral level, and retain a deep affection for the film. So I think a filmmaker could learn a lot from studying “Jaws”, and perhaps from reading about what went into its production.

TH: Do you have a dream project in mind? If so, have you started it?
JF: I have several dream projects in screenplay form, some excerpts at my Flashfilms website. My next short is an adaptation of an idea for a science fiction feature that I’ve brought down to Earth, trying to make it shoot-able. We nearly shot that last year but then I lost the main location, despite its relatively terrestrial proximity. I’m still trying to get the stars to align with that.

TH: Do you collect anything?
JF: Little red notebooks, and some in other colors. Other than that, um, I own a lot of movie soundtrack albums. Some movie posters, too, but I need more walls. I don’t collect memorabilia of the Royal Family, or ceramic ponies, if that’s what you mean.

TH: What does creativity mean to you?
JF: You never know when inspiration will strike, so I try to keep my little red notebook with me at all times.

Rodney Pike is a photo manipulator and caricature artist who specializes in photo-manipulated caricature illustration, humorous illustration and political satire. Some of his clients include FHM Magazine, Tennis Magazine, Bauer Media and Miller Publishing Group.

TH: Do you have any formal art training?
RP: No, I have no formal training with Photoshop, caricatures or art for that matter, but I have a lifetime of experience in art and have worked in many different mediums over the years. My love of art started at a very young age when I was first introduced to the works of Norman Rockwell. His ability to tell a story in a single image had a profound influence on my art. There are many artists who have influenced my work but Rockwell really set the stage for my becoming a humorous illustrator with the hope that my work also tells a story or conveys a message in some way.

TH: What inspired you to start creating and manipulating your art?
RP: Well, after setting my art aside for many years to be a husband and father to 5, I stumbled back into my love for art purely by accident. Just over a year ago, I was searching the web for something and happened across an image that was really funny. I followed the link and it brought me to a FreakingNews Photoshop contest. On April 6th 2010, I did my first photo-manipulation and entered it into one of their contests. Shortly thereafter I started experimenting with caricatures in my photo-manipulations and immediately I knew I had found the medium for me. The passion I once had as a young artist returned and I absolutely love what I’m doing now and I work non-stop. I do however have intentions of incorporating more traditional digital painting into my work in the future.

TH: What is the most important thing to you as an artist?
RP: A couple of things I think. First and foremost, I want to deliver the best work I can possibly do. I take pride in what I do and I wouldn’t compromise the quality of my work for any amount of money. I often spend far more time on a project than I’ve quoted or charge for it. Secondly, It’s vitally important that the client be totally satisfied with the finished product. I have a policy that if the client isn’t 100% satisfied, there is no charge. I also know my abilities and limitations. If I don’t think I can do my best work or deliver exactly what the client is looking for, I will pass on the opportunity. I think that’s just the way my Daddy brought me up.

TH: Please choose two of the people you’ve listed as influencers and tell us how they’ve influenced you.
RP: Obviously Rockwell had an influence on me but as far as living artists whose work I follow and draw inspiration from on a daily basis; there are two who have profoundly influenced me. Sebastian Krüger who is in my opinion an absolute genius with traditional caricatures, yet seldom does caricature painting these days. His work with The Rolling Stones will no doubt go down in history as a truly great body of work. The other is the King of humorous illustration, caricatures and political satire, Jason Seiler. Jason illustrates for many of the top magazines in all mediums, both traditional and digital. He is very versatile and the best in the business. He is a huge source of inspiration for me and has been very supportive of my work. I’m taking formal lessons from him in the very near future.

TH: What does creativity mean to you?
RP: You had to through in a hard one at the end. Well for me I think it’s the ability to draw inspiration from something or someone and use that inspiration and insight to envision something that is not, or to see deeper into what may appear meaningless to some else. A great art teacher of mine use to say;

“there is a difference between looking at something and seeing it”

but it’s not just envisioning something that isn’t there; it’s also driving forward with passion and desire to take a medium and infuse something into your art with that medium that is beautiful, inspiring, emotional, shocking, funny etc. I also think that sometimes creativity just can’t be explained. Sometimes things just come to you. An image takes a life of it’s own and develops into what ever it’s going to be. More often then not, this is how I work, with no method, no concept and no process. I just start working and it just sort of develops into what some may call my style…what ever that is. I haven’t figured that out yet. Another thing that is very important to creativity is, to quote another friend; “keep feeding the dragon”. In other words, we need to continually fuel the fire that burns within us with inspiration, surrounding ourselves with people and things that inspire us.

Radiohead, a band known for its online savvy, recently got a free dose of fan-created marketing through a YouTube cover of their ever popular song Paranoid Android. The cover isn’t like most that you’ll see on the Tube though—this one was created by a user who mixed together clips of 36 other users playing Paranoid Android to create a full length mashup.

It is especially appropriate that this unorthodox approach towards remixing should be applied to a Radiohead song, as the band itself is well known for promoting their albums through decidedly unconventional methods. Take their previous album, The King of Limbs: Radiohead created a massive stir online when they unexpectedly tweeted that their album was available at that exact moment—five days ahead of schedule. And In Rainbows, released in 2007, gave consumers the option of downloading the album for the price they wanted to pay. Both albums hit high on the charts, at least partially due to the marketing strategies Radiohead employed.

Suprem’a is a young graphic designer from Marseille, France who has been passionate about the arts for a very long time. He’s known on the web for his numerous artworks for Madonna’s fan sites, has worked for Digithype Records, Mark Scotto, Reead, DJs vault & Lektor, and is currently developing his own t-shirt models. He is always re-inventing himself which translates in his design work.

TH: What do you think makes a good artist?
S: Nowadays, a good artist is not only a man or a woman able to be creative and to do artworks. A good artist has to be intelligent and really often connected to the Internet. He/she has to find the best ways to promote himself/herself, maybe by creating a buzz? I also think the best artists are these who work in viral communication.

TH: Who/what inspires you?
S: The first thing which inspires me is music. I listen to music most of my time. The first person who inspires me in music is Madonna. I can’t hide it, my devotion for her made me become who I am today; she is at the beginning of my passion for graphics and design. I can add Sam Sparro, Daft Punk, Rihanna… I don’t only like their music; I also love their visual universes. I’m also inspired by people like Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, So Me from Ed Banger Records, or also Julien and Stephane from Exterface Studio, who are for my the new Tom of Finland of photography.

TH: If you could meet and work with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
S: There are too many artists I’d like to meet and work with, especially in music, fashion, and painting. And also in video games! But the first of the list is Franc Fernandez. I’m absolutely in love with what he does, especially with Sam Sparro and Lady GaGa. He has a really creative spirit and his universe is really amazing. I would really like to see my work coming to life with him.

TH: What does creativity mean to you?
S: Well… It’s difficult to answer because this word gave birth to lots of things in my head. And that is why I think this is the perfect mean to describe my explanation… To resume my thoughts, I think “creativity” is to take an idea, a thing, and to let it grow in your head, then to explore all the small universes suddenly created in your head, like a sort of piece of gruyère cheese full of holes in fact, and to finally mix it in one drinkable brain-storming juice.

TH: Out of all of the artwork that you have previously done, do you have any favorites? If so, why are they your favorite pieces of work?
S: I have lots of favorites! I think the best of the best is my poster for one of the biggest students’ party in Marseille, France, because many people in Marseille didn’t know I did this one, and when I tell them I did, there is always a small moment of surprise I really enjoy!

My second favorite is a cover for “Feelings Gone” by Basement Jaxx featuring Sam Sparro. Sam used it as a profile picture on his Facebook and congratulated me on Twitter. I thought I was dreaming!

And I think I can add the cover of my first press book to the 3rd place, because it is a memory of my first exhibition, and the beginning of a new era! … But it’s really difficult. These one are the first which came to my mind, but I can add many more to the list!

They say miracles happen to those who believe in it. But what is also true is that if you believe in anything, you hardly ever come out with regrets.

Talenthouse team believed that in their pursuit to get something going they will come out victorious; That there would be mentor out there who would believe in this artist driven platform just like we do. And Voila! after meeting a gazzilion people out there we met one big Bollywood personality who was as excited about the platform just like we were.

With one lucky director ready to showcase his own big umbrella property with us, luck wasn’t that far off as another big personality from Bollywood who has left us mesmerized with his music was rubbing his hands with glee as we discussed the potential of finding outstanding quality of artists through us. He too wanted to soak in the waters of Talenthouse wholeheartedly as he too will be coming out soon with his own umbrella property.

The support we got from the Bollywood Industry has been the pillar of strength for us. It makes every day an opportunity to explore for every member of the Talenthouse team, as we move out looking for new pastures and new horizons to explore, knowing well that only an artist’s understands another artists struggle.
